Vegetarianism

Good morning everybody! Today I have come up with a topic which according to me is significant and needs to be thought upon. I would like to mention that the topic of my speech is based on my personal preference. No offences to the people who do not agree with me. Before I begin I want to see who all present here are Vegetarian. Seems I am talking to the right audience. I am going to talk about Vegetarianism.

It is very rightly said tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are.

The reason why I am supporting Vegetarianism is not just my personal preference but as the speech moves further I will be providing valid facts and figures which are in favour of Vegetarianism and I suppose it will also convince you guys significantly.  My major reasons to support Vegetarianism are based on health, economics and the environment. Under the health section, I would like to put forward human anatomy and physical effects of consuming meat. As you know there are two types of animals Herbivores which feed on plants and Carnivores that feed on flesh.

Now let’s look at our hands and teeth. Carnivores have sharp front teeth to tear the flesh apart. Now do we have sharp front teeth like the Carnivores? Certainly not! We humans have molar teeth suitable to chew our food well while most of the Carnivores do not have molars as they usually swallow their food. Now let’s have a look at our hands. Carnivores have sharp claws again used to tear the flesh while we humans have fingers suitable to hold our food. Coming to the stomach, the length of the intestine in Carnivores is 3 times their height which means they digest the flesh in a short period. The digestive juices in Carnivores are high in Hydrochloric acid which can easily digest the flesh. Now we humans have intestine 12 times our height and the Hydrochloric acid content is 120th that of Carnivores. This difference in the respective digestive systems shows Carnivores easily digest the flesh while we humans need to put 3 times more effort to digest the meat. The flesh remains stored for a longer time in our body which leads to toxicity of blood.

After the human anatomy, I come to the physical effects of meat consumption. Meat has excess fat and cholesterol. This extra fat gets stored in the inner walls of Arteries, thus narrowing their path leading to chances of heart strokes and clots. 90-97% of strokes can be prevented by a plant-based diet. Meat is also low in fibre due to which the food stays even longer and the digestion gets slower. This causes huge damage and can even cause Cancer. Tranquillizers, Antibiotics, Preservatives and almost 2700 different chemicals are used to create and preserve meat. These obviously are harmful to the human body.

Coming to the economics and environment lets break a big myth related to The World Hunger. Overpopulation is said to be the cause of world hunger which is a big illusion. For example, let’s take 16kg of any grain and feed it directly to people. You can feed up to 20 people. If the same amount is given to goats you will get only 1 kg of meat which can only feed 1 -2 people. Thus if the resources are used properly, studies prove, we can easily feed 20 billion people when the current population of the world is 7.3 billion people. So if the majority of the land is cultivated with veg crops used to feed humans and not animals we can easily solve the problem of world hunger.

This not only causes economic damage but the slaughterhouses cause direct natural damage to water a scarce resource and also cause contamination and depletion of the natural environment.

There is this common question people frequently ask me when I say I am a vegetarian and that is what about protein. I counter question them what about elephants and rhinos? These are some vegetarian animals that do not face any growth problems due to lack of protein. Let’s break this myth with some facts. Protein, when digested, gets broken into amino acids responsible for growth and tissue replacement. 14 out of 22 amino acids are made by our body itself and we don’t need to consume protein for this. The remaining 8 amino acids are proven to be abundant in vegetarian foods like beans, nuts and lentils etc.

So these were my reasons to support Vegetarianism. I hope I have made my part clear and conveyed my message to you all success. At the end let’s have the count of our fingers, to sum up why Vegetarianism:

1.       The human body is better suited for a plant-based diet

2.       It’s healthier.

3.       It's economical

4.       Its environment friendly

5.       A balanced plant diet provides all important nutrients.

6.       You look healthier and immunity improves

With this, I end my speech and I hope we have something to think upon. Over to TM
